And it came to passin the fourthyearof Jehoiakimthe sonof Josiahkingof Judah, that thiswordcameuntoJeremiahfromthe LORD, saying, Takethee a rollof a book, and writethereinallthe wordsthatI have spokenuntothee againstIsrael, and againstJudah, and againstallthe nations, from the dayI spokeuntothee, from the daysof Josiah, even untothisday. It may be thatthe houseof Judahwill hearallthe evilwhichIpurposeto dounto them; thatthey may returnevery manfrom his evilway; that I may forgivetheir iniquityand their sin. Then JeremiahcalledBaruchthe sonof Neriah: and Baruchwrotefrom the mouthof Jeremiahallthe wordsof the LORD, whichhe had spokenuntohim, upona rollof a book. And JeremiahcommandedBaruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannotgointo the houseof the LORD: Therefore gothou, and readin the roll, whichthou hast writtenfrom my mouth, the wordsof the LORDin the earsof the peoplein the LORD's houseupon the fastingday: and alsothou shalt readthem in the earsof allJudahthat comeout of their cities. It may bethey will presenttheir supplicationbeforethe LORD, and will returnevery onefrom his evilway: forgreat is the angerand the furythatthe LORDhath pronouncedagainstthispeople. And Baruchthe sonof Neriahdidaccording to allthatJeremiahthe prophetcommandedhim, readingin the bookthe wordsof the LORDin the LORD's house. And it came to passin the fifthyearof Jehoiakimthe sonof Josiahkingof Judah, in the ninthmonth, that they proclaimeda fastbeforethe LORDto allthe peoplein Jerusalem, and to allthe peoplethat camefrom the citiesof Judahunto Jerusalem. Then readBaruchin the bookthe wordsof Jeremiahin the houseof the LORD, in the chamberof Gemariahthe sonof Shaphanthe scribe, in the highercourt, at the entryof the newgateof the LORD's house, in the earsof allthe people. When Michaiahthe sonof Gemariah, the sonof Shaphan, had heardout ofthe bookallthe wordsof the LORD, Then he went downintothe king's house, intothe scribe's chamber: and, lo, allthe princessatthere, even Elishamathe scribe, and Delaiahthe sonof Shemaiah, and Elnathanthe sonof Achbor, and Gemariahthe sonof Shaphan, and Zedekiahthe sonof Hananiah, and allthe princes. Then Michaiahdeclaredunto them allthe wordsthathe had heard, when Baruchreadthe bookin the earsof the people. Therefore allthe princessentJehudithe sonof Nethaniah, the sonof Shelemiah, the sonof Cushi, untoBaruch, saying, Takein thine handthe rollwhereinthou hast readin the earsof the people, and come. So Baruchthe sonof Neriahtookthe rollin his hand, and cameuntothem. And they saiduntohim, Sit downnow, and readit in our ears. So Baruchread it in their ears. Now it came to pass, when they had heardallthe words, they were afraidbothoneand other, and saiduntoBaruch, We will surely tellthe kingof allthesewords. And they askedBaruch, saying, Tellus now, Howdidst thou writeallthesewordsat his mouth? Then Baruchansweredthem, He pronouncedallthesewordsuntome with his mouth, and Iwrote them with inkinthe book. Then saidthe princesuntoBaruch, Go, hidethee, thouand Jeremiah; and let nomanknowwhereye be. And they went intothe kinginto the court, but they laid upthe rollin the chamberof Elishamathe scribe, and toldallthe wordsin the earsof the king. So the kingsentJehudito fetchthe roll: and he tookit out of Elishamathe scribe's chamber. And Jehudireadit in the earsof the king, and in the earsof allthe princeswhich stoodbesidethe king. Now the kingsatin the winterhousein the ninthmonth: and there was a fire on the hearthburningbeforehim. And it came to pass, that when Jehudihad readthreeor fourleaves, he cutit with the penknife, and cast it intothe firethat was onthe hearth, untilallthe rollwas consumedinthe firethat was onthe hearth. Yet they were notafraid, norrenttheir garments, neither the king, nor anyof his servantsthat heardallthesewords. NeverthelessElnathanand Delaiahand Gemariahhad made intercessionto the kingthat he would notburnthe roll: but he would nothearthem. But the kingcommandedJerahmeelthe sonof Hammelech, and Seraiahthe sonof Azriel, and Shelemiahthe sonof Abdeel, to takeBaruchthe scribeand Jeremiahthe prophet: but the LORDhidthem. Then the wordof the LORDcametoJeremiah, after thatthe kinghad burnedthe roll, and the wordswhichBaruchwroteat the mouthof Jeremiah, saying, Takethee againanotherroll, and writeinit allthe formerwordsthatwereinthe firstroll, whichJehoiakimthe kingof Judahhath burned. And thou shalt saytoJehoiakimkingof Judah, Thussaiththe LORD; Thouhast burnedthisroll, saying, Whyhast thou writtentherein, saying, The kingof Babylonshall certainly comeand destroythisland, and shall cause to ceasefromthence manand beast? Thereforethussaiththe LORDofJehoiakimkingof Judah; He shall havenoneto situponthe throneof David: and his dead bodyshall becast outin the dayto the heat, and in the nightto the frost. And I will punishhim and his seedand his servantsfor their iniquity; and I will bringuponthem, and uponthe inhabitantsof Jerusalem, and uponthe menof Judah, allthe evilthatI have pronouncedagainstthem; but they hearkenednot. Then tookJeremiahanotherroll, and gaveit toBaruchthe scribe, the sonof Neriah; who wrotethereinfrom the mouthof Jeremiahallthe wordsof the bookwhichJehoiakimkingof Judahhad burnedin the fire: and there were addedbesidesuntothem manylikewords.
