The wordwhichcametoJeremiahfromthe LORD, saying, Arise, and go downto the potter's house, and thereI will cause thee to hearmy words. Then I went downto the potter's house, and, behold, he wroughta workonthe wheels. And the vesselthathemadeof claywas marredin the handof the potter: so he madeit againanothervessel, asseemedgoodto the potterto make it . Then the wordof the LORDcametome, saying, O houseof Israel, cannotI dowith you as thispotter? saiththe LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are yein mine hand, O houseof Israel. At what instantI shall speakconcerninga nation, and concerninga kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it ; If thatnation, againstwhomI have pronounced, turnfrom their evil, I will repentofthe evilthatI thoughtto dounto them. And at what instantI shall speakconcerninga nation, and concerninga kingdom, to buildand to plant it ; If it doevilin my sight, that it obeynotmy voice, then I will repentofthe good, wherewithI saidI would benefitthem. Nowtherefore goto, speaktothe menof Judah, and tothe inhabitantsof Jerusalem, saying, Thussaiththe LORD; Behold, Iframeevilagainstyou, and devisea deviceagainstyou: returnye nowevery onefrom his evilway, and make your waysand your doingsgood. And they said, There is no hope: butwe will walkafterour own devices, and we will every onedothe imaginationof his evilheart. Thereforethussaiththe LORD; Askye nowamong the heathen, whohath heardsuchthings: the virginof Israelhath donea veryhorrible thing. Will a man leavethe snowof Lebanon which cometh from the rockof the field? or shall the coldflowingwatersthat come from another placebe forsaken? Becausemy peoplehath forgottenme, they have burned incenseto vanity, and they have caused them to stumblein their ways from the ancientpaths, to walkin paths, in a waynotcast up; To maketheir landdesolate, and a perpetualhissing; every onethat passeththerebyshall be astonished, and waghis head. I will scatterthem as with an eastwindbeforethe enemy; I will showthem the back, and notthe face, in the dayof their calamity. Then saidthey, Come, and let us devisedevicesagainstJeremiah; forthe lawshall notperishfrom the priest, nor counselfrom the wise, nor the wordfrom the prophet. Come, and let us smitehim with the tongue, and let us notgive heedtoanyof his words. Give heedtome, O LORD, and hearkento the voiceof them that contendwith me. Shall evilbe recompensedforgood? forthey have diggeda pitfor my soul. Rememberthat I stoodbeforethee to speakgoodforthem, and to turn awaythy wrathfromthem. Thereforedeliver uptheir childrento the famine, and pour outtheir blood bythe forceof the sword; and let their wivesbebereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their menbeputto death; let their young men be slainby the swordin battle. Let a crybe heardfrom their houses, whenthou shalt bringa troopsuddenlyuponthem: forthey have diggeda pitto takeme, and hidsnaresfor my feet. Yet, LORD, thouknowestalltheir counselagainstme to slay me : forgivenottheir iniquity, neitherblot outtheir sinfrom thy sight, but let them beoverthrownbeforethee; deal thus with them in the timeof thine anger.
