And when the peoplesawthatMosesdelayedto come downout ofthe mount, the peoplegathered themselves togetheruntoAaron, and saiduntohim, Up, makeus gods, whichshall gobeforeus; for as for thisMoses, the manthatbrought us upout of the landof Egypt, we knownotwhatis becomeof him. And Aaronsaiduntothem, Break offthe goldenearrings, which are in the earsof your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them untome. And allthe peoplebroke offthe goldenearringswhich were in their ears, and brought them untoAaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashionedit with a graving tool, after he had madeit a moltencalf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, whichbrought thee upout of the landof Egypt. And when Aaronsaw it , he builtan altarbeforeit; and Aaronmade proclamation, and said, Tomorrow is a feastto the LORD. And they rose up earlyon the morrow, and offeredburnt offerings, and broughtpeace offerings; and the peoplesat downto eatand to drink, and rose upto play. And the LORDsaiduntoMoses, Go, get thee down; forthy people, whichthou broughtestout of the landof Egypt, have corrupted themselves : They have turned asidequicklyout ofthe waywhichI commandedthem: they have madethem a moltencalf, and have worshipedit, and have sacrificedthereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, whichhave brought thee upout of the landof Egypt. And the LORDsaiduntoMoses, I have seenthispeople, and, behold, it is a stiffneckedpeople: Nowtherefore let me alone, that my wrathmay wax hotagainst them, and that I may consumethem: and I will makeof thee a greatnation. And Mosesbesoughtthe LORDhis God, and said, LORD, whydoth thy wrathwax hotagainst thy people, whichthou hast brought forthout of the landof Egyptwith greatpower, and with a mightyhand? Whereforeshould the Egyptiansspeak, and say, For mischiefdid he bring them out, to slaythem in the mountains, and to consumethem fromthe faceof the earth? Turnfrom thy fierce wrath, and repentofthis evilagainst thy people. RememberAbraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whomthou sworestby thine own self, and saidstuntothem, I will multiplyyour seedas the starsof heaven, and allthislandthatI have spokenof will I giveunto your seed, and they shall inherit it forever. And the LORDrepentedofthe evilwhichhe thoughtto dounto his people. And Mosesturned, and went downfromthe mount, and the twotablesof the testimony were in his hand: the tables were writtenon boththeir sides; on the one sideand on the other were theywritten. And the tables were the workof God, and the writing was the writingof God, gravenuponthe tables. And when Joshuaheardthe noiseof the peopleas they shouted, he saiduntoMoses, There is a noiseof warin the camp. And he said, It is notthe voiceof them that shoutfor mastery, neither is it the voiceof them that cryfor being overcome: but the noiseof them that singdo Ihear. And it came to pass, as soon ashe came nighuntothe camp, that he sawthe calf, and the dancing: and Moses' angerwaxed hot, and he castthe tablesout of his hands, and brokethem beneaththe mount. And he tookthe calfwhichthey had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it topowder, and strewed it uponthe water, and made the childrenof Israeldrink of it . And MosessaiduntoAaron, Whatdidthispeopleunto thee, thatthou hast broughtso greata sinuponthem? And Aaronsaid, Let notthe angerof my lordwax hot: thouknowestthe people, thatthey are set on mischief. For they saidunto me, Makeus gods, whichshall gobeforeus: for as for thisMoses, the manthatbrought us upout of the landof Egypt, we knownotwhatis becomeof him. And I saidunto them, Whosoeverhath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I castit into the fire, and there came outthiscalf. And when Mosessawthatthe people were naked; ( forAaronhad made them nakedunto their shameamong their enemies:) Then Mosesstoodin the gateof the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come untome. And allthe sonsof Levigathered themselves togetheruntohim. And he saidunto them, Thussaiththe LORDGodof Israel, Putevery manhis swordbyhis side, and go inand outfrom gateto gatethroughout the camp, and slayevery manhis brother, and every manhis companion, and every manhis neighbor. And the childrenof Levididaccording to the wordof Moses: and there fellofthe peoplethatdayabout threethousandmen. For Moseshad said, Consecrateyourselves todayto the LORD, evenevery manupon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestowuponyou a blessingthis day. And it came to passon the morrow, that Mosessaiduntothe people, Yehave sinneda greatsin: and nowI will go upuntothe LORD; peradventureI shall make an atonementforyour sin. And Mosesreturneduntothe LORD, and said, Oh, thispeoplehave sinneda greatsin, and have madethem godsof gold. Yet now, ifthou wilt forgivetheir sin; and ifnot, blotme, I pray thee, out of thy bookwhichthou hast written. And the LORDsaiduntoMoses, Whosoeverhath sinnedagainst me, him will I blot outof my book. Therefore nowgo, leadthe peopleunto the place of whichI have spokenunto thee: behold, mine Angelshall gobeforethee: nevertheless in the daywhen I visitI will visittheir sinuponthem. And the LORDplaguedthe people, becausethey madethe calf, whichAaronmade.
