Then Eliphazthe Temaniteansweredand said, Can a manbe profitableunto God, as he thatis wisemay be profitableuntohimself? Is it any pleasureto the Almighty, thatthou art righteous? or is it gain to him , thatthou makest thy ways perfect? Will he reprovethee for fearof thee? will he enterwiththee into judgment? Is notthy wickednessgreat? and thine iniquitiesinfinite? Forthou hast taken a pledgefrom thy brotherfor naught, and strippedthe nakedof their clothing. Thou hast notgiven waterto the wearyto drink, and thou hast withheldbreadfrom the hungry. But as for the mightyman, he had the earth; and the honorable mandweltin it. Thou hast sent widows awayempty, and the armsof the fatherlesshave been broken. Thereforesnares are round aboutthee, and suddenfeartroubleththee; Ordarkness, that thou canst notsee; and abundanceof waterscoverthee. Is notGodin the heightof heaven? and beholdthe heightof the stars, howhigh they are! And thou sayest, Howdoth Godknow? can he judgethroughthe dark cloud? Thick clouds are a coveringto him, that he seethnot; and he walkethin the circuitof heaven. Hast thou markedthe oldwaywhichwickedmenhave trodden? Whichwere cut downout oftime, whose foundationwas overflownwith a flood: Which saidunto God, Departfromus: and whatcan the Almightydofor them? Yet hefilledtheir houseswith good things : but the counselof the wickedis farfromme. The righteoussee it , and are glad: and the innocentlaugh them to scorn. Whereasour substanceis notcut down, but the remnantof them the fireconsumeth. Acquaintnowthyself withhim, and be at peace: thereby goodshall comeunto thee. Receive, I pray thee, the lawfrom his mouth, and lay uphis wordsin thine heart. Ifthou returntothe Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquityfarfrom thy tabernacles. Then shalt thou lay upgoldasdust, and the gold of Ophiras the stonesof the brooks. Yea, the Almightyshall bethy defense, and thou shalt have plentyof silver. Forthenshalt thou have thy delightinthe Almighty, and shalt lift upthy faceuntoGod. Thou shalt make thy prayeruntohim, and he shall hearthee, and thou shalt paythy vows. Thou shalt also decreea thing, and it shall be establishedunto thee: and the lightshall shineuponthy ways. When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall savethe humble person. He shall deliverthe islandof the innocent: and it is deliveredby the purenessof thine hands.
