Then answeredEliphazthe Temanite, and said, Should a wiseman uttervainknowledge, and fillhis bellywith the east wind? Should he reasonwith unprofitabletalk? or with speecheswherewith he can do nogood? Yea, thoucastest offfear, and restrainestprayerbeforeGod. Forthy mouthuttereththine iniquity, and thou choosestthe tongueof the crafty. Thine own mouthcondemneththee, and notI: yea, thine own lipstestifyagainst thee. Art thou the firstman that was born? or wast thou madebeforethe hills? Hast thou heardthe secretof God? and dost thou restrainwisdomtothyself? Whatknowestthou, that we knownot? what understandestthou, which is notinus? With us are boththe grayheadedandvery aged men, much elderthan thy father. Are the consolationsof Godsmallwiththee? is there any secretthingwiththee? Whydoth thine heartcarry thee away? and whatdo thy eyeswink at, Thatthou turnestthy spiritagainstGod, and lettest such wordsgo outof thy mouth? What is man, thathe should be clean? and he which is bornof a woman, thathe should be righteous? Behold, he putteth no trustin his saints; yea, the heavensare notcleanin his sight. How much moreabominableand filthy is man, which drinkethiniquitylike water? I will showthee, hearme; and that which I have seenI will declare; Whichwisemen have toldfrom their fathers, and have nothid it : Unto whom alonethe earthwas given, and nostrangerpassedamongthem. The wicked mantravaileth with painall his days, and the numberof yearsis hiddento the oppressor. A dreadfulsound is in his ears: in prosperitythe destroyershall come uponhim. He believethnotthat he shall returnout ofdarkness, and heis waited forofthe sword. Hewandereth abroadfor bread, saying , Where is it ? he knoweththatthe dayof darknessis readyat his hand. Troubleand anguishshall make him afraid; they shall prevail againsthim, as a kingreadyto the battle. Forhe stretcheth outhis handagainstGod, and strengtheneth himselfagainstthe Almighty. He runnethuponhim, even on his neck, upon the thickbossesof his bucklers: Becausehe coverethhis facewith his fatness, and makethcollops of faton his flanks. And he dwelleth indesolatecities, and in houses whichnoman inhabiteth, whichare readyto become heaps. He shall notbe rich, neithershall his substancecontinue, neithershall he prolongthe perfectionthereof upon the earth. He shall notdepartout ofdarkness; the flameshall dry uphis branches, and by the breathof his mouthshall he go away. Let nothim that is deceivedtrustin vanity: forvanityshall behis recompense. It shall be accomplishedbeforehis time, and his branchshall notbe green. He shall shake offhis unripe grapeas the vine, and shall cast offhis floweras the olive. Forthe congregationof hypocrites shall be desolate, and fireshall consumethe tabernaclesof bribery. They conceivemischief, and bring forthvanity, and their bellypreparethdeceit.
