Amaziah was twentyand fiveyearsold when he began to reign, and he reignedtwentyand nineyearsin Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddanof Jerusalem. And he did that which was rightin the sightof the LORD, butnotwith a perfectheart. Now it came to pass, whenthe kingdomwas establishedtohim, that he slewhis servantsthat had killedthe kinghis father. But he slewnottheir children, but did as it is writtenin the lawin the bookof Moses, wherethe LORDcommanded, saying, The fathersshall notdieforthe children, neithershall the childrendieforthe fathers, butevery manshall diefor his own sin. Moreover Amaziahgathered Judah together, and madethem captainsover thousands, and captainsover hundreds, according to the housesof their fathers, throughout allJudahand Benjamin: and he numberedthem from twentyyearsoldand above, and foundthem threehundredthousandchoice men, able to go forthto war, that could handlespearand shield. He hiredalso a hundredthousandmighty menof valorout of Israelfor a hundredtalentsof silver. But there camea manof Godtohim, saying, O king, let notthe armyof Israelgowiththee; forthe LORD is notwithIsrael, to wit, with allthe childrenof Ephraim. Butifthouwilt go, do it , be strongfor the battle: Godshall make thee fallbeforethe enemy: forGodhathpowerto help, and to cast down. And Amaziahsaidto the manof God, But whatshall we dofor the hundredtalentswhichI have givento the armyof Israel? And the manof Godanswered, The LORDisable to givethee much morethan this. Then Amaziahseparatedthem, to wit , the armythatwas cometohim out of Ephraim, to gohomeagain: wherefore their angerwas greatlykindledagainst Judah, and they returnedhomein greatanger. And Amaziahstrengthened himself, and led forthhis people, and wentto the valleyof salt, and smoteof the childrenof Seirtenthousand. And other tenthousand left alivedid the childrenof Judahcarry away captive, and broughtthem unto the topof the rock, and cast them downfrom the topof the rock, that they allwere broken in pieces. But the soldiersof the armywhichAmaziahsent back, that they should not gowithhim to battle, fell uponthe citiesof Judah, from Samariaeven untoBeth-horon, and smotethreethousandofthem, and tookmuchspoil. Now it came to pass, after thatAmaziahwas comefrom the slaughterof the Edomites, that he broughtthe godsof the childrenof Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himselfbeforethem, and burned incenseunto them. Wherefore the angerof the LORDwas kindledagainst Amaziah, and he sentuntohim a prophet, which saidunto him, Whyhast thou sought afterthe godsof the people, whichcould notdelivertheir own peopleout of thine hand? And it came to pass, as he talkedwithhim, that the king saidunto him, Art thou madeof the king's counsel? forbear; whyshouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophetforbore, and said, I knowthatGodhath determinedto destroythee, becausethou hast donethis, and hast nothearkenedunto my counsel. Then Amaziahkingof Judahtook advice, and senttoJoash, the sonof Jehoahaz, the sonof Jehu, kingof Israel, saying, Come, let us see one anotherin the face. And Joashkingof IsraelsenttoAmaziahkingof Judah, saying, The thistlethat was in Lebanonsenttothe cedarthat was in Lebanon, saying, Givethy daughterto my sonto wife: and there passed bya wildbeastthat was in Lebanon, and trod downthe thistle. Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smittenthe Edomites; and thine heartlifteth thee upto boast: abidenowat home; whyshouldest thou meddleto thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judahwiththee? But Amaziahwould nothear; forit came of God, thathe might deliverthem into the hand of their enemies , becausethey sought afterthe godsof Edom. So Joashthe kingof Israelwent up; and they saw one anotherin the face, both heand Amaziahkingof Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. And Judahwas put to the worsebeforeIsrael, and they fledevery manto his tent. And Joashthe kingof IsraeltookAmaziahkingof Judah, the sonof Joash, the sonof Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and broughthim to Jerusalem, and broke downthe wallof Jerusalemfrom the gateof Ephraimtothe cornergate, fourhundredcubits. And he took allthe goldand the silver, and allthe vesselsthat were foundin the houseof GodwithObed-edom, and the treasuresof the king's house, the hostagesalso, and returnedto Samaria. And Amaziahthe sonof Joashkingof Judahlivedafterthe deathof Joashsonof Jehoahazkingof Israelfifteenyears. Now the restof the actsof Amaziah, firstand last, behold, are they notwritteninthe bookof the kingsof Judahand Israel? Now after the timethatAmaziahdid turn awayfrom followingthe LORDthey madea conspiracyagainsthim in Jerusalem; and he fledto Lachish: but they sentto Lachishafterhim, and slewhim there. And they broughthim uponhorses, and buriedhim withhis fathersin the cityof Judah.
