Now kingDavidwas old and strickenin years; and they coveredhim with clothes, but he got no heat. Wherefore his servantssaidunto him, Let there be soughtfor my lordthe kinga youngvirgin: and let her standbeforethe king, and let her cherishhim, and let her liein thy bosom, that my lordthe kingmay get heat. So they soughtfor a fairdamselthroughout allthe coastsof Israel, and foundAbishaga Shunammite, and broughther to the king. And the damsel was veryfair, and cherishedthe king, and ministeredto him: but the kingknewher not. Then Adonijahthe sonof Haggithexalted himself, saying, Iwill be king: and he preparedhim chariotsand horsemen, and fiftymento runbeforehim. And his fatherhad notdispleasedhim at any timein saying, Whyhast thou doneso? and healso was a verygoodly man ; and his mother borehim afterAbsalom. And he conferredwithJoabthe sonof Zeruiah, and withAbiatharthe priest: and they followingAdonijahhelped him . But Zadokthe priest, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and Nathanthe prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty menwhich belonged to David, werenotwithAdonijah. And Adonijahslewsheepand oxenand fat cattlebythe stoneof Zoheleth, which is byEn-rogel, and calledallhis brethrenthe king's sons, and allthe menof Judahthe king's servants: But Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomonhis brother, he callednot. Wherefore NathanspokeuntoBath-sheba the motherof Solomon, saying, Hast thou notheardthatAdonijahthe sonof Haggithdoth reign, and Davidour lordknoweth it not? Nowtherefore come, let me, I pray thee, givethee counsel, that thou mayest savethine own life, and the lifeof thy sonSolomon. Goand get thee inuntokingDavid, and sayuntohim, Didst notthou, my lord, O king, swearunto thine handmaid, saying, AssuredlySolomonthy sonshall reignafterme, and heshall situponmy throne? whythen doth Adonijahreign? Behold, while thou yettalkesttherewiththe king, Ialso will come inafterthee, and confirmthy words. And Bath-sheba went inuntothe kinginto the chamber: and the kingwas veryold; and Abishagthe Shunammiteministered untothe king. And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisanceunto the king. And the kingsaid, Whatwouldest thou? And she saidunto him, My lord, thouswarestby the LORDthy Godunto thine handmaid, saying , AssuredlySolomonthy sonshall reignafterme, and heshall situponmy throne. And now, behold, Adonijahreigneth; and now, my lordthe king, thou knowest it not: And he hath slainoxenand fat cattleand sheepin abundance, and hath calledallthe sonsof the king, and Abiatharthe priest, and Joabthe captainof the host: but Solomonthy servanthath he notcalled. And thou, my lord, O king, the eyesof allIsrael are uponthee, that thou shouldest tellthem whoshall sitonthe throneof my lordthe kingafterhim. Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lordthe kingshall sleepwithhis fathers, that Iand my sonSolomonshall be countedoffenders. And, lo, while she yettalkedwiththe king, Nathanthe prophetalso came in. And they toldthe king, saying, BeholdNathanthe prophet. And when he was come inbeforethe king, he bowed himselfbefore the kingwithhis faceto the ground. And Nathansaid, My lord, O king, hast thousaid, Adonijahshall reignafterme, and heshall situponmy throne? Forhe is gone downthis day, and hath slainoxenand fat cattleand sheepin abundance, and hath calledallthe king's sons, and the captainsof the host, and Abiatharthe priest; and, behold, they eatand drinkbeforehim, and say, God savekingAdonijah. But me, even methy servant, and Zadokthe priest, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and thy servantSolomon, hath he notcalled. Is thisthingdonebymy lordthe king, and thou hast notshowed it untothy servant, whoshould sitonthe throneof my lordthe kingafterhim? Then kingDavidansweredand said, Callme Bath-sheba. And she came intothe king's presence, and stoodbeforethe king. And the kingswore, and said, As the LORDliveth, thathath redeemedmy soulout of alldistress, EvenasI sworeunto thee by the LORDGodof Israel, saying, AssuredlySolomonthy sonshall reignafterme, and heshall situponmy thronein my stead; evensowill I certainly dothisday. Then Bath-sheba bowedwith her faceto the earth, and did reverenceto the king, and said, Let my lordkingDavidliveforever. And kingDavidsaid, Callme Zadokthe priest, and Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada. And they camebeforethe king. The kingalso saidunto them, Takewithyou the servantsof your lord, and cause Solomonmy sonto rideuponmine own mule, and bring him downtoGihon: And let Zadokthe priestand Nathanthe prophetanointhim therekingoverIsrael: and blowye with the trumpet, and say, God savekingSolomon. Then ye shall come upafterhim, that he may comeand situponmy throne; for heshall be kingin my stead: and I have appointedhim to beruleroverIsraeland overJudah. And Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiadaansweredthe king, and said, Amen: the LORDGodof my lordthe kingsayso too . Asthe LORDhath beenwithmy lordthe king, even sobehe withSolomon, and make his throne greaterthan the throneof my lordkingDavid. So Zadokthe priest, and Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomonto rideuponkingDavid's mule, and broughthim toGihon. And Zadokthe priesttooka hornof oilout ofthe tabernacle, and anointedSolomon. And they blewthe trumpet; and allthe peoplesaid, God savekingSolomon. And allthe peoplecame upafterhim, and the peoplepipedwith pipes, and rejoicedwith greatjoy, so that the earthrentwith the soundof them. And Adonijahand allthe gueststhat were withhim heard it as theyhad made an endof eating. And when Joabheardthe soundof the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noiseof the citybeing in an uproar? And while he yetspoke, behold, Jonathanthe sonof Abiatharthe priestcame: and Adonijahsaidunto him, Come in; forthou art a valiantman, and bringest good tidings. And Jonathanansweredand saidto Adonijah, Verilyour lordkingDavidhath made Solomon king. And the kinghath sentwithhim Zadokthe priest, and Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to rideuponthe king's mule: And Zadokthe priestand Nathanthe prophethave anointedhim kingin Gihon: and they are come upfrom thencerejoicing, so that the cityrangagain. This is the noisethatye have heard. And alsoSolomonsittethonthe throneof the kingdom. And moreoverthe king's servantscameto blessour lordkingDavid, saying, Godmake the nameof Solomonbetterthan thy name, and make his thronegreaterthan thy throne. And the kingbowed himselfuponthe bed. And alsothussaidthe king, Blessed be the LORDGodof Israel, whichhath given one to sitonmy thronethis day, mine eyeseven seeing it . And allthe gueststhat were with Adonijahwere afraid, and rose up, and wentevery manhis way. And Adonijahfearedbecauseof Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught holdon the hornsof the altar. And it was toldSolomon, saying, Behold, AdonijahfearethkingSolomon: for, lo, he hath caught holdon the hornsof the altar, saying, Let kingSolomonswearunto me todaythat he will notslayhis servantwith the sword. And Solomonsaid, Ifhe will showhimself a worthyman, there shall nota hair ofhim fallto the earth: but ifwickednessshall be foundin him, he shall die. So kingSolomonsent, and they brought him downfromthe altar. And he cameand bowed himselfto kingSolomon: and Solomonsaidunto him, Goto thine house.
