And the LORDsentNathanuntoDavid. And he cameuntohim, and saidunto him, There weretwomenin onecity; the onerich, and the otherpoor. The rich man hadexceedingmanyflocksand herds: But the poor man had nothing, saveonelittleewe lamb, whichhe hadboughtand nourished up: and it grew uptogetherwithhim, and withhis children; it did eatof his own meat, and drankof his own cup, and layin his bosom, and wasunto him as a daughter. And there camea travelerunto the richman, and he sparedto takeof his own flockand of his own herd, to dressfor the wayfaring manthat was comeunto him; but tookthe poorman's lamb, and dressedit for the manthat was cometohim. And David's angerwas greatlykindledagainst the man; and he saidtoNathan, As the LORDliveth, the manthat hath donethis thing shall surely die: And he shall restorethe lambfourfold, becausehe didthisthing, and becausehe had nopity. And NathansaidtoDavid, Thou art the man. Thussaiththe LORDGodof Israel, Ianointedthee kingoverIsrael, and Ideliveredthee out of the handof Saul; And I gavethee thy master's house, and thy master's wivesinto thy bosom, and gavethee the houseof Israeland of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have givenunto thee suchand suchthings. Whereforehast thou despisedthe commandmentof the LORD, to doevilin his sight? thou hast killedUriahthe Hittitewith the sword, and hast takenhis wife to be thy wife, and hast slainhim with the swordof the childrenof Ammon. Nowtherefore the swordshall neverdepartfrom thine house; becausethou hast despisedme, and hast takenthe wifeof Uriahthe Hittiteto bethy wife. Thussaiththe LORD, Behold, I will raise upevilagainstthee out of thine own house, and I will takethy wivesbefore thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall liewiththy wivesin the sightof thissun. Forthoudidst it secretly: but Iwill dothisthingbeforeallIsrael, and beforethe sun. And DavidsaiduntoNathan, I have sinnedagainst the LORD. And NathansaiduntoDavid, The LORDalsohath put awaythy sin; thou shalt notdie. Howbeit, becauseby thisdeedthou hast given great occasionto the enemiesof the LORDto blaspheme, the childalso that is bornunto thee shall surely die. And Nathandeparteduntohis house. And the LORDstruckthe childthatUriah's wifeboreunto David, and it was very sick. Davidtherefore besoughtGodforthe child; and Davidfasted, and wentin, and layallnightupon the earth. And the eldersof his housearose, and went tohim, to raise him upfromthe earth: but he wouldnot, neitherdid he eatbreadwiththem. And it came to passon the seventhday, that the childdied. And the servantsof Davidfearedto tellhim thatthe childwas dead: forthey said, Behold, while the childwasyet alive, we spokeuntohim, and he would nothearkenunto our voice: howwill he then vexhimself, if we tellhim that the childis dead? But when Davidsawthathis servantswhispered, Davidperceivedthatthe childwas dead: therefore Davidsaiduntohis servants, Is the childdead? And they said, He is dead. Then Davidarosefrom the earth, and washed, and anointed himself , and changedhis apparel, and cameinto the houseof the LORD, and worshiped: then he cametohis own house; and when he required, they setbreadbefore him, and he did eat. Then saidhis servantsuntohim, Whatthing is thisthatthou hast done? thou didst fastand weepfor the child, while it was alive; but whenthe childwas dead, thou didst riseand eatbread. And he said, While the childwas yetalive, I fastedand wept: forI said, Whocan tell whether GODwill be graciousto me, that the childmay live? But nowhe is dead, whereforeshould Ifast? canI bring him backagain? Ishall gotohim, but heshall notreturntome. And DavidcomfortedBath-sheba his wife, and wentin untoher, and laywithher: and she borea son, and he calledhis nameSolomon: and the LORDlovedhim. And he sentby the handof Nathanthe prophet; and he calledhis nameJedidiah, becauseof the LORD. And Joabfoughtagainst Rabbahof the childrenof Ammon, and tookthe royalcity. And JoabsentmessengerstoDavid, and said, I have foughtagainst Rabbah, andhave takenthe cityof waters. Nowtherefore gatherthe restof the peopletogether, and encampagainstthe city, and takeit: lestItakethe city, and it be calledaftermy name. And Davidgatheredallthe peopletogether, and wentto Rabbah, and foughtagainst it, and tookit. And he tooktheir king's crownfrom offhis head, the weightwhereof was a talentof goldwith the preciousstones: and it was set onDavid's head. And he brought forththe spoilof the cityin greatabundance. And he brought forththe peoplethat were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrowsof iron, and under axesof iron, and made them pass throughthe brickkiln: and thusdidhe unto allthe citiesof the childrenof Ammon. So Davidand allthe peoplereturnedunto Jerusalem.
