And Judahtooka wifefor Erhis firstborn, whose name was Tamar. And Er, Judah's firstborn, waswickedin the sightof the LORD; and the LORDslewhim. And Judahsaidunto Onan, Go inuntothy brother's wife, and marryher, and raise upseedto thy brother. And Onanknewthatthe seedshould notbehis; and it came to pass, whenhe went inuntohis brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lestthat he should giveseedto his brother. And the thing whichhe diddispleasedthe LORD: wherefore he slewhim also. Then saidJudahto Tamarhis daughter-in-law, Remaina widowat thy father's house, tillShelahmy sonbe grown: forhe said, Lest peradventurehediealso, as his brethren did . And Tamarwentand dweltin her father's house. And in process of timethe daughterof ShuahJudah's wifedied; and Judahwas comforted, and went upuntohis sheepshearersto Timnath, heand his friendHirahthe Adullamite. And it was toldTamar, saying, Beholdthy father-in-law goeth upto Timnathto shearhis sheep. And she puther widow's garmentsoff fromher, and coveredher with a veil, and wrapped herself, and satin an openplace, which is bythe wayto Timnath; forshe sawthatShelahwas grown, and shewas notgivenunto him to wife. When Judahsawher, he thoughther to be a harlot; becauseshe had coveredher face. And he turneduntoher bythe way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come inuntothee; ( forhe knewnotthatshe was his daughter-in-law.) And she said, Whatwilt thou giveme, thatthou mayest come inuntome? And he said, Iwill send thee a kidfromthe flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, tillthou send it ? And he said, Whatpledgeshall I givethee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staffthat is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came inuntoher, and she conceivedby him. And she arose, and went away, and laid byher veilfromher, and put onthe garmentsof her widowhood. And Judahsentthe kidby the handof his friendthe Adullamite, to receive his pledgefrom the woman's hand: but he foundher not. Then he askedthe menof that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openlybythe way side? And they said, There wasnoharlotin this place . And he returnedtoJudah, and said, I cannotfindher; and alsothe menof the placesaid, that there wasnoharlotin this place . And Judahsaid, Let her take it to her, lestwe beshamed: behold, I sentthiskid, and thouhast notfoundher. And it came to passabout threemonthsafter, that it was toldJudah, saying, Tamarthy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with childby whoredom. And Judahsaid, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. When she was brought forth, shesenttoher father-in-law, saying, By the man, whosethese are, am Iwith child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. And Judahacknowledged them , and said, She hath been more righteousthanI; becausethatI gaveher notto Shelahmy son. And he knewher againnomore. And it came to passin the timeof her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwifetookand bounduponhis handa scarlet thread, saying, Thiscame outfirst. And it came to pass, as he drew backhis hand, that, behold, his brothercame out: and she said, Howhast thou broken forth? this breach be uponthee: therefore his namewas calledPharez. And afterwardcame outhis brother, thathad the scarlet threaduponhis hand: and his namewas calledZarah.
