The LORDalso spokeuntoJoshua, saying, Speaktothe childrenof Israel, saying, Appointout for you citiesof refuge, whereofI spokeuntoyou by the handof Moses: That the slayerthat killeth any personunawares and unwittinglymay fleethither: and they shall beyour refugefrom the avengerof blood. And when he that doth fleeuntooneof thosecitiesshall standat the enteringof the gateof the city, and shall declarehis causein the earsof the eldersof thatcity, they shall takehim into the cityunto them, and givehim a place, that he may dwellamongthem. And ifthe avengerof bloodpursueafterhim, then they shall notdeliverthe slayerup into his hand; becausehe smotehis neighborunwittingly, and hatedhim notformerly. And he shall dwellin thatcity, untilhe standbeforethe congregationfor judgment, and untilthe deathof the highpriestthatshall bein thosedays: thenshall the slayerreturn, and comeuntohis own city, and untohis own house, untothe cityfrom whencehe fled. And they appointedKedeshin Galileein mountNaphtali, and Shechemin mountEphraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountainof Judah. And on the other sideJordanby Jerichoeastward, they assignedBezerin the wildernessupon the plainout of the tribeof Reuben, and Ramothin Gileadout of the tribeof Gad, and Golanin Bashanout of the tribeof Manasseh. Thesewerethe citiesappointedfor allthe childrenof Israel, and for the strangerthat sojournethamongthem, that whosoeverkilleth any personat unawaresmight fleethither, and notdieby the handof the avengerof blood, untilhe stoodbeforethe congregation.
