ThereforeI fledbeforeunto Tarshish: forI knewthatthou art a graciousGod, and merciful, slowto anger, and of greatkindness, and repentestthee ofthe evil. Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my lifefromme; for it is betterfor me to diethan to live. Then saidthe LORD, Doest thou wellto be angry? So Jonahwent outofthe city, and saton the east sideof the city, and theremadehim a booth, and satunderit in the shadow, tillhe might seewhatwould becomeof the city. And the LORDGodprepareda gourd, and made it to come upoverJonah, that it might bea shadowoverhis head, to deliverhim from his grief. So Jonahwasexceeding gladofthe gourd. But Godprepareda wormwhen the morningrosethe next day, and it smotethe gourdthat it withered. And it came to pass, when the sundid arise, that Godprepareda vehementeastwind; and the sunbeatuponthe headof Jonah, that he fainted, and wishedinhimselfto die, and said, It is betterfor me to diethan to live. And GodsaidtoJonah, Doest thou wellto be angryforthe gourd? And he said, I do wellto be angry, even untodeath. Then saidthe LORD, Thouhast had pityonthe gourd, for the whichthou hast notlabored, neithermadest it grow; which came upina night, and perishedina night: And should notIspareNineveh, that greatcity, whereinaremorethan sixscore thousandpersonsthatcannotdiscernbetweentheir right handand their left hand; and also muchcattle?
