Joseph, being seventeenyearsold, wasfeedingthe flockwithhis brethren; and the lad was withthe sonsof Bilhah, and withthe sonsof Zilpah, his father's wives: and Josephbroughtuntohis fathertheir evilreport. Now IsraellovedJosephmore than allhis children, becausehe was the sonof his old age: and he madehim a coatof many colors. And when his brethrensawthattheir fatherlovedhim more than allhis brethren, they hatedhim, and couldnotspeakpeaceablyunto him. And Josephdreameda dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hatedhim yetthe more. And he saiduntothem, Hear, I pray you, thisdreamwhichI have dreamed: For, behold, we were bindingsheavesinthe field, and, lo, my sheafarose, and alsostood upright; and, behold, your sheavesstood round about, and made obeisanceto my sheaf. And his brethrensaidto him, Shalt thou indeed reignoverus? orshalt thou indeed have dominionover us? And they hatedhim yetthe moreforhis dreams, and forhis words. And he dreamedyetanotherdream, and toldit his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreameda dreammore; and, behold, the sunand the moonand the elevenstarsmade obeisanceto me. And he told it tohis father, and tohis brethren: and his fatherrebukedhim, and saidunto him, What is thisdreamthatthou hast dreamed? Shall Iand thy motherand thy brethrenindeed cometo bow down ourselvesto thee to the earth? And his brethrenenviedhim; but his fatherobservedthe saying. And his brethrenwentto feedtheir father's flockin Shechem. And IsraelsaiduntoJoseph, Do notthy brethrenfeed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will sendthee untothem. And he saidto him, Here am I . And he saidto him, Go, I pray thee, seewhether it be wellwith thy brethren, and wellwith the flocks; and bringme wordagain. So he senthim out of the valeof Hebron, and he cameto Shechem. And a certain manfoundhim, and, behold, he was wanderingin the field: and the manaskedhim, saying, Whatseekestthou? And he said, Iseekmy brethren: tellme, I pray thee, wheretheyfeed their flocks . And the mansaid, They are departedhence; forI heardthem say, Let us goto Dothan. And Josephwentafterhis brethren, and foundthem in Dothan. And when they sawhim afar off, even beforehe came nearuntothem, they conspiredagainst him to slayhim. And they saidonetoanother, Behold, thisdreamercometh. Comenowtherefore, and let us slayhim, and casthim into somepit, and we will say, Some evilbeasthath devouredhim: and we shall seewhatwill becomeof his dreams. And Reubenheard it , and he deliveredhim out of their hands; and said, Let us notkillhim. And Reubensaiduntothem, Shednoblood, but casthim intothispitthat is in the wilderness, and laynohandupon him; thathe might ridhim out of their hands, to deliverhim tohis fatheragain. And it came to pass, whenJosephwas comeuntohis brethren, that they strippedJosephout of his coat, his coatof many colorsthat was onhim; And they tookhim, and casthim into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was nowaterin it. And they sat downto eatbread: and they lifted uptheir eyesand looked, and, behold, a companyof Ishmaelitescamefrom Gileadwith their camelsbearingspiceryand balmand myrrh, goingto carry it downto Egypt. And Judahsaiduntohis brethren, Whatprofit is it ifwe slayour brother, and concealhis blood? Come, and let us sellhim to the Ishmaelites, and let notour handbeupon him; forhe is our brother and our flesh. And his brethrenwere content. Then there passed byMidianitesmerchantmen; and they drewand lifted upJosephout ofthe pit, and soldJosephto the Ishmaelitesfor twenty pieces of silver: and they broughtJosephinto Egypt. And Reubenreturneduntothe pit; and, behold, Joseph was notin the pit; and he renthis clothes. And he returneduntohis brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whithershall Igo? And they tookJoseph's coat, and killeda kidof the goats, and dippedthe coatin the blood; And they sentthe coatof many colors, and they brought it totheir father; and said, Thishave we found: knownowwhether it be thy son's coatorno. And he knewit, and said, It is my son's coat; an evilbeasthath devouredhim; Josephis without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacobrenthis clothes, and putsackclothupon his loins, and mournedforhis sonmanydays. And allhis sonsand allhis daughtersrose upto comforthim; but he refusedto be comforted; and he said, ForI will go downinto the graveuntomy sonmourning. Thus his fatherweptfor him.
