Thenverilythefirst covenant hadalsoordinancesof divine service, anda worldlysanctuary. Forthere was a tabernaclemade; thefirst, wherein was thecandlestick, andthetable, andtheshewbread; whichis calledthe sanctuary. Andafterthesecondveil, the tabernaclewhich is calledthe holiest of all; Which hadthe goldencenser, andthearkof thecovenantoverlaidround aboutwith gold, wherein was the goldenpotthat hadmanna, andAaron's rodthat budded, andthetablesof thecovenant; Andoveritthe cherubimof gloryshadowingthemercy seat; ofwhichwe cannotnowspeakparticularly. Nowwhen these thingswere thusordained, thepriestswentalwaysintothefirsttabernacle, accomplishingtheservice of God. Butintothesecond went thehigh priestaloneonceevery year, notwithoutblood, whichhe offeredforhimself, and for theerrorsof thepeople: TheHolyGhostthissignifying, that thewayinto theholiest of allwas not yetmade manifest, while as thefirsttabernaclewasyetstanding: Which was a figureforthetimethen present, inwhichwere offeredbothgiftsandsacrifices, that couldnotmake him that did the service perfect, as pertainingto the conscience; Which stood onlyinmeatsanddrinks, anddiverswashings, andcarnalordinances, imposed on them untilthe timeof reformation. ButChristbeing comea high priestof good thingsto come, bya greaterandmore perfecttabernacle, notmade with hands, that is to say, notof thisbuilding; Neitherbythe bloodof goatsandcalves, butbyhis ownbloodhe entered inonceintotheholy place, having obtainedeternalredemption for us. Forifthebloodof bullsandof goats, andthe ashesof a heifersprinklingtheunclean, sanctifiethtothepurifyingof theflesh: How muchmoreshall thebloodof Christ, whothroughthe eternalSpiritofferedhimselfwithout spotto God, purgeyourconsciencefromdeadworksto servethe livingGod? Andfor this causehe isthe mediatorof the newtestament, thatby means of death, forthe redemptionof thetransgressions that were underthefirsttestament, they which are calledmight receivethepromiseof eternalinheritance. Forwherea testament is, there must also of necessitybethe deathof thetestator. Fora testament is of forceafter men are dead: otherwiseit is of no strength at allwhilethetestatorliveth. Whereuponneitherthefirst testament was dedicatedwithoutblood. ForwhenMoseshad spokeneverypreceptto allthepeopleaccordingto the law, he tookthebloodof calvesandof goats, withwater, andscarletwool, andhyssop, and sprinkledboththebook, andallthepeople, Saying, This is thebloodof thetestamentwhichGodhath enjoineduntoyou. Moreoverhe sprinkledwith bloodboththetabernacle, andallthevesselsof theministry. Andalmostall thingsare bythelawpurgedwithblood; andwithoutshedding of bloodisnoremission. It was thereforenecessarythat thepatternsof thingsintheheavensshould be purifiedwith these; buttheheavenly thingsthemselveswith bettersacrificesthanthese. ForChristis notenteredintothe holy placesmade with hands, which are the figuresof thetrue; butintoheavenitself, nowto appearin thepresenceof Godforus: Noryet thathe should offerhimselfoften, asthehigh priestenterethintotheholy placeevery yearwithbloodof others; For thenmustheoftenhave sufferedsincethe foundationof the world: butnowonceinthe endof theworldhath he appearedto put awaysinbythesacrificeof himself. Andasit is appointedunto menonceto die, butafterthisthe judgment: SoChristwas onceofferedto bearthe sinsof many; and unto them that look forhimshall he appearthesecond timewithoutsinuntosalvation.
