Buta certainmannamedAnanias, withSapphirahiswife, solda possession, Andkept back part oftheprice, hiswifealsobeing privy to it, andbroughta certainpart, and laid it attheapostles' feet. ButPetersaid, Ananias, whyhath Satanfilledthineheartto lieto theHolyGhost, andto keep back part ofthepriceof theland? While it remained, was it not thine own? andafter it was sold, wasit not inthine ownpower? whyhast thou conceivedthisthinginthineheart? thou hast notliedunto men, butunto God. AndAnaniashearingthesewordsfell down, and gave up the ghost: andgreatfearcameonallthem that heardthese things. Andtheyoung menarose, wound him up, andcarried him out, and buried him. Andit wasaboutthe spaceof threehoursafter, whenhiswife, notknowingwhat was done, came in. AndPeteransweredunto her, Tellmewhetherye soldthelandfor so much? Andshesaid, Yea, for so much. ThenPetersaiduntoher, Howis it thatyehave agreed togetherto tempttheSpiritof the Lord? behold, thefeetof them which have buriedthyhusband are atthedoor, andshall carry thee out. Thenfell she downstraightwayathisfeet, andyielded up the ghost: andtheyoung mencame in, and foundherdead, and, carrying her forth, buried her byherhusband. Andgreatfearcameuponallthechurch, anduponas many asheardthese things. Andbythehandsof theapostleswere manysignsandwonderswroughtamongthepeople; ( andthey wereallwith one accordinSolomon's porch. Andof therestdurstno manjoinhimself to them: butthepeoplemagnifiedthem. Andbelieverswere the moreaddedto theLord, multitudesbothof menandwomen.) Insomuch thatthey brought forththesickintothestreets, andlaid them onbedsandcouches, thatat the leasttheshadowof Peterpassing bymight overshadowsomeof them. There camealsoa multitude out of thecitiesround aboutuntoJerusalem, bringingsick folks, andthem which were vexedwithuncleanspirits: and theywere healedevery one. Thenthehigh priestrose up, andalltheythat were withhim, (which isthe sectof theSadducees,) and were filledwith indignation, Andlaidtheirhandsontheapostles, andputtheminthe commonprison. Butthe angelof the Lordbynightopenedtheprisondoors, andbrought them forth, and said, Go, standand speakinthetempleto thepeopleallthewordsof thislife. Andwhen they heard that, they enteredintothetempleearly in the morning, andtaught. Butthehigh priestcame, andtheythat were withhim, and called the council together, andallthesenateof thechildrenof Israel, andsenttotheprisonto have thembrought. Butwhen theofficerscame, and foundthemnotintheprison, theyreturned, and told, Saying, Theprisontrulyfoundwe shutwithallsafety, andthekeepersstandingwithoutbeforethedoors: butwhen we had opened, we foundno manwithin. Nowwhenthehigh priestandthecaptainof thetempleandthechief priestsheardthesethings, they doubtedofthemwhereuntothiswould grow. Thencameoneand toldthem, saying, Behold, themenwhomye putinprisonarestandinginthetemple, andteachingthepeople. Thenwentthecaptainwiththeofficers, and broughtthemwithoutviolence: forthey fearedthepeople, lestthey should have been stoned. Andwhen they had broughtthem, they set them beforethecouncil: andthehigh priestaskedthem, Saying, Did notwe straitly commandyouthat ye should notteachinthisname? and, behold, ye have filledJerusalemwith yourdoctrine, andintendto bringthisman's blooduponus. ThenPeterandthe other apostlesansweredand said, We oughtto obeyGodratherthanmen. TheGodof ourfathersraised upJesus, whomyeslewand hangedona tree. Himhath Godexaltedwith hisright hand to be a Princeanda Savior, for to giverepentanceto Israel, andforgivenessof sins. Andwearehiswitnessesof thesethings; and so is alsotheHolyGhost, whomGodhath givento them that obeyhim. Whentheyheard that, they were cut to the heart, andtook counselto slaythem. Thenstood there uponeinthecouncil, a Pharisee, namedGamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputationamong allthepeople, and commandedto puttheapostlesfortha little space; Andsaiduntothem, Ye menof Israel, take heedto yourselveswhatye intendto doas touchingthesemen. Forbeforethesedaysrose upTheudas, boastinghimselfto besomebody; to whoma numberof men, aboutfour hundred, joinedthemselves: whowas slain; andall, as many asobeyedhim, were scattered, andbroughttonaught. Afterthis manrose upJudasof Galileeinthedaysof thetaxing, anddrew awaymuchpeopleafterhim: he alsoperished; andall, even as many asobeyedhim, were dispersed. AndnowI sayunto you, Refrainfromthesemen, andlet them alone: forifthiscounselorthisworkbeofmen, it will come to nought: Butifit beofGod, ye cannotoverthrowit; lest haplyye be foundevento fight against God. Andto himthey agreed: andwhen they had calledtheapostles, and beaten them, they commandedthat they should notspeakinthenameof Jesus, andlet them go. Andtheydepartedfromthe presenceof thecouncil, rejoicingthatthey were counted worthyto suffer shameforhisname. Anddailyinthetemple, andin every house, they ceasednotto teachandpreachJesusChrist.
