Andsomeofthembelieved, andconsorted withPaulandSilas; andof thedevoutGreeksa greatmultitude, andof thechiefwomennota few. ButtheJewswhich believed not, moved with envy, took untothem certainlewdfellowsof thebaser sort, andgathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, andassaultedthehouseof Jason, and soughttobring them outtothepeople. Andwhen they foundthemnot, they drewJasonandcertainbrethrenuntotherulers of the city, crying, Thesethat have turned the world upside downare comehitheralso; WhomJasonhath received: andthesealldocontraryto thedecreesof Caesar, sayingthat there isanotherking, one Jesus. Andthey troubledthepeopleandtherulers of the city, when they heardthese things. Andwhen they had takensecurityofJason, andof theother, they let them go. Andthebrethrenimmediatelysent awayPaulandSilasbynightuntoBerea: whocoming thither wentintothesynagogueof theJews. Theseweremore noblethan thoseinThessalonica, in that theyreceivedthewordwithallreadiness of mind, and searchedtheScripturesdaily, whetherthose thingswereso. Thereforemanyofthembelieved; alsoof honorablewomenwhich were Greeks, andof men, nota few. ButwhentheJewsofThessalonicahad knowledgethatthewordof Godwas preachedofPaulatBerea, they camethither also, and stirred upthepeople. Andthenimmediatelythebrethrensent awayPaulto goas it weretothesea: butSilasandTimothyabodetherestill. Andthey that conductedPaulbroughthimuntoAthens: andreceivinga commandmentuntoSilasandTimothyfor to cometohimwith all speed, they departed. Nowwhile Paulwaited forthematAthens, hisspiritwas stirredinhim, when he sawthecitywholly given to idolatry. Thereforedisputedheinthesynagoguewith theJews, andwith thedevout persons, andinthemarketdailywiththem that met withhim. Thencertainphilosophersof theEpicureans, andof theStoics, encounteredhim. Andsomesaid, Whatwillthisbabblersay? othersome, He seemethto bea setter forthof strangegods: becausehe preachedunto themJesus, andtheresurrection. Andthey tookhim, and broughthim untoAreopagus, saying, Maywe knowwhatthisnewdoctrine, whereofthouspeakest, is ? Forthou bringestcertainstrange thingstoourears: we wouldknowthereforewhatthese thingsmean. ThenPaulstoodinthe midstof Mars' hill, and said, Ye menof Athens, I perceivethat inall thingsyearetoo superstitious. Foras I passed by, andbeheldyourdevotions, I foundanaltarwith this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWNGOD. Whomthereforeye ignorantlyworship, himdeclareIunto you. Godthat madetheworldandall thingstherein, seeing that heisLordof heavenandearth, dwellethnotintemplesmade with hands; Neitheris worshipedwithmen's hands, as though he neededany thing, seeing hegivethto alllife, andbreath, and all things; Andhath madeofonebloodallnationsof menfor to dwellonallthefaceof theearth, and hath determinedthe timesbefore appointed, andtheboundsof theirhabitation; That they should seektheLord, ifhaplythey might feel afterhim, andfindhim, thoughhe benotfarfromeveryoneof us: Forinhimwe live, andmove, andhave our being; ascertainalsoof your ownpoetshave said, Forwe arealsohisoffspring. Forasmuch thenas we arethe offspringof God, we oughtnotto thinkthat theGodheadislike untogold, orsilver, orstone, gravenby artandman's device. Andthetimesof this ignoranceGodwinkedat; but nowcommandethallmenevery whereto repent: Becausehe hath appointeda day, inthe whichhe willjudgetheworldinrighteousnessby that manwhomhe hath ordained; whereof he hath givenassuranceunto all men, in that he hath raisedhimfromthe dead.
