Nowthere wereinthechurchthat wasatAntiochcertainprophetsandteachers; asBarnabas, andSimeonthat was calledNiger, andLuciusof Cyrene, andManaen, which had been brought up withHerodthetetrarch, andSaul. Astheyministeredto theLord, andfasted, theHolyGhostsaid, SeparatemeBarnabasandSaulfortheworkwhereuntoI have calledthem. And whenthey had fastedandprayed, andlaid their handson them, they sent them away. Sothey, beingsent forthbytheHolyGhost, departeduntoSeleucia; andfrom thencethey sailedtoCyprus. Andwhen they wereatSalamis, they preachedthewordof Godinthesynagoguesof theJews: andthey hadalsoJohnto their minister. Andwhen they had gone throughtheisleuntoPaphos, they founda certainsorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whosename was Barjesus: Whichwaswiththedeputy of the country, SergiusPaulus, a prudentman; whocalled forBarnabasandSaul, and desiredto hearthewordof God. ButElymasthesorcerer( forsois his name by interpretation) withstoodthem, seekingto turn awaythedeputyfromthefaith. ThenSaul, ( whoalso is called Paul,) filledwith the HolyGhost, set his eyesonhim, And said, Ofullof allsubtletyandallmischief, thou childof the devil, thou enemyof allrighteousness, wilt thou notceaseto perverttherightwaysof the Lord? Andnow, behold, the handof theLord is uponthee, andthou shalt beblind, notseeingthesunfora season. Andimmediatelythere fellonhima mistanda darkness; andhe went aboutseekingsome to lead him by the hand. Thenthedeputy, when he sawwhat was done, believed, being astonishedatthedoctrineof theLord. Nowwhen Pauland his companyloosedfromPaphos, they cametoPergain Pamphylia: andJohndepartingfromthemreturnedtoJerusalem. Butwhen theydepartedfromPerga, they cametoAntiochin Pisidia, andwentintothesynagogueon thesabbathday, and sat down. Andafterthereadingof thelawandtheprophetstherulers of the synagoguesentuntothem, saying, Ye men and brethren, ifye haveany wordof exhortationforthepeople, say on. ThenPaulstood up, andbeckoningwith his handsaid, Menof Israel, andye that fearGod, give audience. TheGodof thispeopleof Israelchoseourfathers, andexaltedthepeoplewhenthey dwelt as strangersinthe landof Egypt, andwitha higharmbroughthe themout ofit. Andaboutthe timeof forty yearssuffered he their mannersinthewilderness. Andwhen he had destroyedsevennationsinthe landof Canaan, he divided their land to them by lot. Andafterthathe gave unto them judgesabout the space offour hundredandfiftyyears, untilSamueltheprophet. And afterwardthey desireda king: andGodgaveunto themSaulthe sonof Kish, a manofthe tribeof Benjamin, by the space of fortyyears. Andwhen he had removedhim, he raised upunto themDavidto be their king; to whomalsohe gave testimony, and said, I have foundDavidthe son of Jesse, a manaftermine ownheart, whichshall fulfilallmywill. Ofthis man's seedhath Godaccordingto his promiseraisedunto Israela Savior, Jesus: When Johnhad first preachedbeforehiscomingthe baptismof repentanceto allthepeopleof Israel. AndasJohnfulfilledhis course, he said, Whomthinkye that Iam? Iamnot he. But, behold, there comethone afterme, whoseshoesof his feetI amnotworthyto loose. Men and brethren, childrenof the stockof Abraham, andwhosoever amongyoufearethGod, to youis thewordof thissalvationsent. Forthey that dwellatJerusalem, andtheirrulers, because they knew him not, noryet thevoicesof theprophetswhich are readeverysabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. Andthough they foundnocauseof death in him, yet desiredthey Pilatethat heshould be slain. Andwhenthey had fulfilledallthat was writtenofhim, they took him downfromthetree, and laid him ina sepulcher. ButGodraisedhimfromthe dead: And hewas seenmanydaysof them which came up withhimfromGalileetoJerusalem, whoarehiswitnessesuntothepeople. Andwedeclare unto you glad tidings, how that thepromisewhich was madeuntothefathers, Godhath fulfilledthe sameunto ustheirchildren, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; asit is alsowritteninthesecondpsalm, ThouartmySon, this dayhave Ibegottenthee. Andas concerning thathe raised him upfromthe dead, now no moretoreturntocorruption, he saidon this wise, I will giveyouthesuremerciesof David. Whereforehe saithalsoinanother psalm, Thou shalt notsufferthineHoly Oneto seecorruption. ForDavid, after hehad servedhis owngenerationby thewillof God, fell on sleep, andwas laiduntohisfathers, andsawcorruption: Buthe, whomGodraised again, sawnocorruption. Beit knownunto youtherefore, men and brethren, thatthroughthis manis preachedunto youthe forgivenessof sins: Andbyhimallthat believeare justifiedfromall things, from whichye couldnotbe justifiedbythelawof Moses. Bewaretherefore, lestthat comeuponyou, which is spoken ofintheprophets; Behold, ye despisers, andwonder, andperish: forIworka workinyourdays, a workwhichye shall in no wisebelieve, thougha mandeclareit unto you. Andwhen theJewswere goneout ofthesynagogue, theGentilesbesoughtthat thesewordsmight be preachedto themthenextsabbath. Nowwhen thecongregationwas broken up, manyof theJewsandreligiousproselytesfollowedPaulandBarnabas: who, speaking tothem, persuadedthemto continuein thegraceof God. Andthenextsabbath daycame almost the whole city togetherto hearthewordof God. Butwhen theJewssawthemultitudes, they were filledwith envy, andspake againstthose things which were spokenbyPaul, contradictingandblaspheming. ThenPaulandBarnabaswaxed bold, and said, It wasnecessarythat thewordof Godshould firsthave been spokento you: butseeingye put it from you, andjudgeyourselvesunworthyof everlastinglife, lo, we turntotheGentiles. Forsohath theLordcommandedus, saying, I have settheeto be a lightof the Gentiles, that thoushouldest beforsalvationuntothe endsof theearth. Andwhen theGentilesheardthis, they were glad, andglorifiedthewordof theLord: andas many aswereordainedtoeternallifebelieved. Andthewordof theLordwas publishedthroughoutalltheregion. ButtheJewsstirred upthedevoutandhonorablewomen, andthechief menof thecity, andraisedpersecutionagainstPaulandBarnabas, andexpelledthemout oftheircoasts. Buttheyshook offthedustof theirfeetagainstthem, and cameuntoIconium. Andthediscipleswere filledwith joy, andwith the HolyGhost.
