ThenPilatethereforetookJesus, andscourged him. Andthesoldiersplaiteda crownofthorns, and put it onhishead, andthey put onhima purplerobe, Andsaid, Hail, Kingof theJews! andthey smote him with their hands. Pilatethereforewentforthagain, andsaithunto them, Behold, I bringhimforthto you, thatye may knowthatI findnofaultinhim. ThencameJesusforth, wearingthecrownof thorns, andthepurplerobe. And Pilate saithunto them, Beholdtheman! Whenthechief prieststhereforeandofficerssawhim, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilatesaithunto them, Takeyehim, andcrucify him : forIfindnofaultinhim. TheJewsansweredhim, Wehavea law, andbyourlawhe oughtto die, becausehe madehimselfthe Sonof God. WhenPilatethereforeheardthatsaying, he was the more afraid; Andwentagainintothejudgment hall, andsaithunto Jesus, Whenceartthou? ButJesusgavehimnoanswer. ThensaithPilateunto him, Speakestthou notunto me? knowestthou notthatI havepowerto crucifythee, andhavepowerto releasethee? Jesusanswered, Thou couldest havenopower at all againstme, except it weregiventhee from above: therefore he that deliveredme unto theehath the greatersin. And fromthenceforthPilatesoughtto releasehim: buttheJewscried out, saying, Ifthou let this man go, thou artnotCaesar's friend: whosoevermakethhimselfa kingspeaketh againstCaesar. When Pilatethereforeheardthatsaying, he broughtJesusforth, andsat downinthejudgment seatina placethat is calledthe Pavement, butin the Hebrew, Gabbatha. Andit wasthe preparationof thepassover, andaboutthe sixthhour: andhe saithunto theJews, BeholdyourKing! Buttheycried out, Away with him, away with him, crucifyhim. Andhe bearinghiscrosswent forthintoa placecalled the place of a skull, whichis calledin the HebrewGolgotha: Wherethey crucifiedhim, andtwootherwithhim, on either side one, andJesusin the midst. AndPilatewrotea title, andput it onthecross. Andthe writingwas, JESUSOF NAZARETHTHEKINGOF THEJEWS. Thensaidthechief priestsof theJewsto Pilate, Writenot, Thekingof theJews; butthathesaid, IamKingof theJews. Pilateanswered, WhatI have writtenI have written. Thenthesoldiers, whenthey had crucifiedJesus, tookhisgarments, andmadefourparts, to everysoldiera part; andalso his coat: nowthecoatwaswithout seam, wovenfromthetopthroughout. They saidthereforeamongthemselves, Let us notrendit, butcast lotsforit, whoseit shall be: thattheScripturemight be fulfilled, which saith, They partedmyraimentamong them, andformyvesturethey did castlots. These thingsthereforethesoldiersdid. Nowthere stoodbythecrossof Jesushismother, andhismother's sister, Marythe wife of Cleophas, andMaryMagdalene. Andfromthathourthat discipletookheruntohis own home. Afterthis, Jesusknowingthatall thingswere nowaccomplished, thattheScripturemight be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Nowthere was seta vesselfullof vinegar: andtheyfilleda spongewith vinegar, andput it uponhyssop, andput itto hismouth. WhenJesusthereforehad receivedthevinegar, he said, It is finished: andhe bowedhis head, and gave uptheghost. TheJewstherefore, becauseit wasthe preparation, thatthebodiesshould notremainuponthecrossonthesabbath day, ( forthatsabbathdaywasa high day,) besoughtPilatethattheirlegsmight be broken, and that they might be taken away. AndagainanotherScripturesaith, They shall lookonhim whomthey pierced. AndafterthisJosephofArimathaea, beinga discipleof Jesus, butsecretlyforfearof theJews, besoughtPilatethathe might take awaythebodyof Jesus: andPilategave him leave.
