Take heed that ye donotyouralmsbeforemen, to be seen of them: otherwise ye havenorewardofyourFatherwhich is inheaven. Thereforewhen thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpetbeforethee, asthehypocritesdointhesynagoguesandinthestreets, that they may have gloryofmen. Verily I say unto you, They havetheirreward. But when thoudoestalms, let notthy left handknowwhatthy right handdoeth: Thatthinealms may beinsecret: andthyFather which seethinsecrethimself shall rewardtheeopenly. Andwhen thou prayest, thou shalt notbeasthehypocrites are : for they love to praystandinginthesynagoguesandinthecorners of thestreets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They havetheirreward. Butthou, when thou prayest, enterintothycloset, and when thou hast shutthydoor, pray to thyFatherwhich is insecret; andthyFather which seethinsecret shall rewardtheeopenly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, astheheathen do : for they thinkthat they shall be heardfortheir much speaking. Be not ye therefore like untothem: foryourFatherknoweth what things ye haveneed of, beforeyeaskhim. After this mannerthereforeprayye: OurFatherwhich art inheaven, Hallowed be thyname. Thykingdomcome. Thywill be doneinearth, as it is inheaven. Giveus this dayourdailybread. Andforgiveusourdebts, asweforgiveourdebtors. Andleadusnotintotemptation, butdeliverusfromevil: Forthineisthekingdom, andthepower, andtheglory, forever. Amen. Forif ye forgivementheirtrespasses, yourheavenlyFather will alsoforgiveyou: Butif ye forgivenotmentheirtrespasses, neither will yourFatherforgiveyourtrespasses. Moreoverwhen ye fast, benot, asthehypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfiguretheirfaces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They havetheirreward. Butthou, when thou fastest, anointthinehead, andwashthyface; That thou appearnot unto men to fast, but unto thyFatherwhich is insecret: andthyFather, which seethinsecret, shall rewardtheeopenly. Lay not up for yourselvestreasuresuponearth, wheremothandrust doth corrupt, andwherethieves break throughandsteal: But lay up for yourselvestreasuresinheaven, whereneithermothnorrust doth corrupt, andwherethieves do not break throughnorsteal: Forwhereyourtreasureis, there will yourheartbealso. Thelight of thebodyistheeye: ifthereforethineeyebesingle, thywholebody shall be full of light. Butifthineeyebeevil, thywholebody shall be full of darkness. Ifthereforethelightthat is intheebedarkness, how great is that darkness! No mancanservetwomasters: foreither he will hatetheone, andlovetheother; or else he will hold to the one, anddespisetheother. Ye cannotserveGodandmammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for yourlife, what ye shall eat, orwhat ye shall drink; nor yet for yourbody, what ye shall put on. Isnotthelifemore than meat, andthebody than raiment? Beholdthefowls of theair: for they sownot, neither do they reap, norgatherintobarns; yetyourheavenlyFatherfeedeththem. Are ye not much better than they? Whichofyou by taking thoughtcanaddonecubituntohisstature? Andwhy take ye thoughtforraiment? Considerthelilies of thefield, how they grow; they toilnot, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, ThatevenSolomoninallhisglory was not arrayedlikeone of these. Wherefore, ifGodsoclothethegrass of thefield, which todayis, andtomorrow is castinto the oven, shall he notmuchmore clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ( For after all these things do theGentilesseek:) foryourheavenlyFatherknoweththat ye have need of all these things. Butseek ye firstthekingdom of God, andhisrighteousness; andall these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thoughtforthemorrow: forthemorrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto theday is theevilthereof.
