In the beginningof the reignof Jehoiakimthe sonof Josiahkingof Judahcamethiswordfromthe LORD, saying, Thussaiththe LORD; Standin the courtof the LORD's house, and speakuntoallthe citiesof Judah, which cometo worshipin the LORD's house, allthe wordsthatI commandthee to speakuntothem; diminishnota word: If so bethey will hearken, and turnevery manfrom his evilway, that I may repentme ofthe evil, whichIpurposeto dounto them becauseof the evilof their doings. And thou shalt sayuntothem, Thussaiththe LORD; Ifye will nothearkentome, to walkin my law, whichI have setbeforeyou, To hearkentothe wordsof my servantsthe prophets, whomIsentuntoyou, both rising up early, and sending them , but ye have nothearkened; Then will I makethishouselike Shiloh, and will makethiscitya curseto allthe nationsof the earth. So the priestsand the prophetsand allthe peopleheardJeremiahspeakingthesewordsin the houseof the LORD. Now it came to pass, when Jeremiahhad made an endof speakingallthatthe LORDhad commanded him to speakuntoallthe people, that the priestsand the prophetsand allthe peopletookhim, saying, Thou shalt surely die. Whyhast thou prophesiedin the nameof the LORD, saying, Thishouseshall belike Shiloh, and thiscityshall be desolatewithoutan inhabitant? And allthe peoplewere gatheredagainstJeremiahin the houseof the LORD. When the princesof Judahheardthesethings, then they came upfrom the king's houseunto the houseof the LORD, and sat downin the entryof the newgateof the LORD's house . Then spokethe priestsand the prophetsuntothe princesand toallthe people, saying, Thisman is worthyto die; forhe hath prophesiedagainstthiscity, asye have heardwith your ears. Then spokeJeremiahuntoallthe princesand toallthe people, saying, The LORDsentme to prophesyagainstthishouseand againstthiscityallthe wordsthatye have heard. Therefore nowamendyour waysand your doings, and obeythe voiceof the LORDyour God; and the LORDwill repenthim ofthe evilthathe hath pronouncedagainstyou. As for me, behold, I am in your hand: dowith me as seemethgoodand meetunto you. Butknow ye for certain, thatifyeput me to death, yeshall surelybringinnocentblooduponyourselves, and uponthiscity, and uponthe inhabitantsthereof: forof a truththe LORDhath sentme untoyou to speakallthesewordsin your ears. Then saidthe princesand allthe peopleuntothe priestsand tothe prophets; Thisman is notworthyto die: forhe hath spokentous in the nameof the LORDour God. Then rose upcertainof the eldersof the land, and spoketoallthe assemblyof the people, saying, Micahthe Morasthiteprophesiedin the daysof Hezekiahkingof Judah, and spoketoallthe peopleof Judah, saying, Thussaiththe LORDof hosts; Zionshall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalemshall becomeheaps, and the mountainof the houseas the high placesof a forest. Did Hezekiahkingof Judahand allJudahput him at all to death? did he notfearthe LORD, and besoughtthe LORD, and the LORDrepentedhim ofthe evilwhichhe had pronouncedagainstthem? Thus might weprocuregreatevilagainstour souls. And there wasalsoa manthat prophesiedin the nameof the LORD, Urijahthe sonof Shemaiahof Kirjath-jearim, who prophesiedagainstthiscityand againstthislandaccording to allthe wordsof Jeremiah: And when Jehoiakimthe king, with allhis mighty men, and allthe princes, heardhis words, the kingsoughtto put him to death: but when Urijahheardit, he was afraid, and fled, and went intoEgypt; And Jehoiakimthe kingsentmeninto Egypt, namely , Elnathanthe sonof Achbor, and certain menwithhim intoEgypt. And they fetched forthUrijahout of Egypt, and broughthim untoJehoiakimthe king; who slewhim with the sword, and casthis dead bodyintothe gravesof the commonpeople. Neverthelessthe handof Ahikamthe sonof ShaphanwaswithJeremiah, that they should notgivehim into the handof the peopleto put him to death.
