Joash was sevenyearsoldwhen he began to reign, and he reignedfortyyearsin Jerusalem. His mother's namealso was Zibiahof Beer-sheba. And Joashdid that which was rightin the sightof the LORDallthe daysof Jehoiadathe priest. And Jehoiadatookfor him twowives; and he begotsonsand daughters. And it came to passafterthis, that Joashwasmindedto repairthe houseof the LORD. And he gathered togetherthe priestsand the Levites, and saidto them, Go outunto the citiesof Judah, and gatherof allIsraelmoneyto repairthe houseof your Godfromyearto year, and see that yehastenthe matter. Howbeit the Leviteshastened it not. And the kingcalledfor Jehoiadathe chief, and saidunto him, Whyhast thou notrequiredofthe Levitesto bring inout of Judahand out of Jerusalemthe collection, according to the commandment of Mosesthe servantof the LORD, and of the congregationof Israel, for the tabernacleof witness? Forthe sonsof Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken upthe houseof God; and alsoallthe dedicated thingsof the houseof the LORDdid they bestowupon Baalim. And at the king's commandmentthey madeachest, and setit withoutat the gateof the houseof the LORD. And they madea proclamationthrough Judahand Jerusalem, to bring into the LORDthe collection that Mosesthe servantof God laid uponIsraelin the wilderness. And allthe princesand allthe peoplerejoiced, and brought in, and castinto the chest, untilthey had made an end. Now it came to pass, that at what timethe chestwas broughtuntothe king's officeby the handof the Levites, and when they sawthat there was muchmoney, the king's scribeand the highpriest's officercameand emptiedthe chest, and tookit, and carriedit tohis placeagain. Thusthey diddayby day, and gatheredmoneyin abundance. And the kingand Jehoiadagaveit tosuch as didthe workof the serviceof the houseof the LORD, and hiredmasonsand carpentersto repairthe houseof the LORD, and alsosuch as wroughtironand brassto mendthe houseof the LORD. So the workmenwrought, and the workwas perfectedbythem, and they setthe houseof Godinhis state, and strengthenedit. And when they had finished it , they broughtthe restof the moneybeforethe kingand Jehoiada, whereof were madevesselsfor the houseof the LORD, even vesselsto minister, and to offer withal , and spoons, and vesselsof goldand silver. And they offeredburnt offeringsin the houseof the LORDcontinuallyallthe daysof Jehoiada. But Jehoiadawaxed old, and was fullof dayswhen he died; a hundredand thirtyyearsold was he when he died. And they buriedhim in the cityof Davidamongthe kings, becausehe had donegoodin Israel, both towardGod, and toward his house. Now afterthe deathof Jehoiadacamethe princesof Judah, and made obeisanceto the king. Thenthe kinghearkeneduntothem. And they leftthe houseof the LORDGodof their fathers, and servedgrovesand idols: and wrathcameuponJudahand Jerusalemfor thistheir trespass. Yet he sentprophetsto them, to bring them againuntothe LORD; and they testifiedagainst them: but they would notgive ear. And the Spiritof Godcame uponZechariahthe sonof Jehoiadathe priest, which stoodabovethe people, and saidunto them, ThussaithGod, Whytransgressyethe commandmentsof the LORD, that ye cannotprosper? becauseye have forsakenthe LORD, he hath also forsakenyou. And they conspiredagainsthim, and stonedhim with stonesat the commandmentof the kingin the courtof the houseof the LORD. Thus Joashthe kingrememberednotthe kindnesswhichJehoiadahis fatherhad donetohim, but slewhis son. And when he died, he said, The LORDlook upon it , and require it . And it came to passat the endof the year, that the hostof Syriacame upagainsthim: and they cametoJudahand Jerusalem, and destroyedallthe princesof the peoplefrom among the people, and sentallthe spoilof them unto the kingof Damascus. Forthe armyof the Syrianscamewith a small companyof men, and the LORDdelivereda verygreathostinto their hand, becausethey had forsakenthe LORDGodof their fathers. So they executedjudgmentagainstJoash. And when they were departedfromhim, ( forthey lefthim in greatdiseases,) his own servantsconspiredagainsthim for the bloodof the sonsof Jehoiadathe priest, and slewhim onhis bed, and he died: and they buriedhim in the cityof David, but they buriedhim notin the sepulchersof the kings. And theseare they that conspiredagainsthim; Zabadthe sonof Shimeathan Ammonitess, and Jehozabadthe sonof Shimritha Moabitess. Now concerning his sons, and the greatnessof the burdens laid uponhim, and the repairingof the houseof God, behold, they are writteninthe storyof the bookof the kings. And Amaziahhis sonreignedin his stead.
