And, behold, there camea manof Godout of Judahby the wordof the LORDuntoBethel: and Jeroboamstoodbythe altarto burn incense. And he criedagainstthe altarin the wordof the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thussaiththe LORD; Behold, a childshall be bornunto the houseof David, Josiahby name; and uponthee shall he offerthe priestsof the high placesthat burn incenseuponthee, and men's bonesshall be burntuponthee. And he gavea signthe sameday, saying, This is the signwhichthe LORDhath spoken; Behold, the altarshall be rent, and the ashesthat are uponit shall be poured out. And it came to pass, when kingJeroboamheardthe sayingof the manof God, whichhad criedagainstthe altarin Bethel, that he put forthhis handfromthe altar, saying, Lay holdon him. And his hand, whichhe put forthagainsthim, dried up, so that he couldnotpull it in againtohim. The altaralso was rent, and the ashespoured outfromthe altar, according to the signwhichthe manof Godhad givenby the wordof the LORD. And the kingansweredand saiduntothe manof God, Entreatnowthe faceof the LORDthy God, and prayforme, that my handmay be restored me again. And the manof Godbesoughtthe LORD, and the king's handwas restored him again, and becameas it was before. And the kingsaiduntothe manof God, Comehomewithme, and refreshthyself, and I will givethee a reward. And the manof Godsaiduntothe king, Ifthou wilt giveme halfthine house, I will notgo inwiththee, neitherwill I eatbreadnordrinkwaterin thisplace: Forsowas it chargedme by the wordof the LORD, saying, Eatnobread, nordrinkwater, norturn againby the same waythatthou camest. So he wentanotherway, and returnednotby the waythathe cametoBethel. Now there dweltan oldprophetin Bethel; and his sonscameand toldhim allthe worksthatthe manof Godhad donethat dayin Bethel: the wordswhichhe had spokenuntothe king, them they toldalso to their father. And their fathersaiduntothem, Whatwaywenthe? For his sonshad seenwhatwaythe manof Godwent, whichcamefrom Judah. And he saiduntohis sons, Saddleme the ass. So they saddledhim the ass: and he rodethereon, And wentafterthe manof God, and foundhim sittingunderan oak: and he saiduntohim, Art thouthe manof GodthatcamestfromJudah? And he said, I am . Then he saiduntohim, Comehomewithme, and eatbread. And he said, I maynotreturnwiththee, nor go inwiththee: neitherwill I eatbreadnordrinkwaterwiththee in thisplace: Forit was saidtome by the wordof the LORD, Thou shalt eatnobreadnordrinkwaterthere, norturn againto goby the waythatthou camest. He saidunto him, I am a prophetalsoas thou art ; and an angelspokeuntome by the wordof the LORD, saying, Bring him backwiththee intothine house, that he may eatbreadand drinkwater. But he liedunto him. So he went backwithhim, and did eatbreadin his house, and drankwater. And it came to pass, as theysatatthe table, that the wordof the LORDcameuntothe prophetthatbrought him back: And he crieduntothe manof GodthatcamefromJudah, saying, Thussaiththe LORD, Forasmuchas thou hast disobeyedthe mouthof the LORD, and hast notkeptthe commandmentwhichthe LORDthy Godcommandedthee, But camest back, and hast eatenbreadand drunkwaterin the place, of the which the LORD did saytothee, Eatnobread, and drinknowater; thy carcassshall notcomeuntothe sepulcherof thy fathers. And it came to pass, afterhe had eatenbread, and afterhe had drunk, that he saddledfor him the ass, to wit , for the prophetwhomhe had brought back. And when he was gone, a lionmethim by the way, and slewhim: and his carcasswascastin the way, and the assstoodbyit, the lionalso stoodbythe carcass. And, behold, menpassed by, and sawthe carcasscastin the way, and the lionstandingbythe carcass: and they cameand told it in the citywherethe oldprophetdwelt. And when the prophetthatbrought him backfromthe wayheard thereof , he said, It is the manof God, whowas disobedientunto the wordof the LORD: therefore the LORDhath deliveredhim unto the lion, which hath tornhim, and slainhim, according to the wordof the LORD, whichhe spokeunto him. And he spoketohis sons, saying, Saddleme the ass. And they saddled him . And he wentand foundhis carcasscastin the way, and the assand the lionstandingbythe carcass: the lionhad noteatenthe carcass, nortornthe ass. And the prophettook upthe carcassof the manof God, and laidit uponthe ass, and brought it back: and the oldprophetcametothe city, to mournand to buryhim. And he laidhis carcassin his own grave; and they mournedoverhim, saying , Alas, my brother! And it came to pass, afterhe had buriedhim, that he spoketohis sons, saying, When I am dead, then buryme in the sepulcherwhereinthe manof God is buried; laymy bonesbesidehis bones: Forthe sayingwhichhe criedby the wordof the LORDagainstthe altarin Bethel, and againstallthe housesof the high placeswhich are in the citiesof Samaria, shall surely come to pass. AfterthisthingJeroboamreturnednotfrom his evil way, but madeagainof the lowestof the peoplepriestsof the high places: whosoever would, he consecratedhim, and he became one of the priestsof the high places. And thisthingbecamesinunto the houseof Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from offthe faceof the earth.
